2004 Chrysler Pacifica Rod Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Can Rod Bearing Caps Be Marked and Installed for Accurate Assembly on 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: Mark the bearing caps with a label before you take them out, as different caps cannot be interchanged. The bearing shells should be installed so the tangs fit in the machined grooves of both the rods and caps, all lined up with the rods, not the caps, for a smooth fit. Make sure all the crankshafts are installed on a single group until finished, so that no limits of taper or out-of-round on their journals are over 0.005 mm (or 0.0001 inch). Bearings have standard, 0.025 mm (0.001 inch) and 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) undersized versions and they should be mounted as a pair; never file the bearing halves or the pins in the rod or caps. You should use plastigage to check the main and connecting rod bearing clearances. Before reusing the rod bearing bolts, take a close look at the threads; if they look necked down, they have to be changed. If any of the threads on a connecting rod bolt do not touch the scale when you put it against them, the bolt must be changed. Prior to installation, clear the threads and check them closely, then attach very clean bolts finger tight and tighten the connecting rod cap to specification by turning one bolt at a time. Position a dial indicator over a fixed point on the engine and set its probe at a right angle with the connecting rod cap being measured. Now go to the back end of the rod's travel, zero the dial indicator and read the indicator as you bring the rod forward to its full limit. Look at the connecting rod's length and width with the engine specifications, rechecking them for every connecting rod as you turn the crankshaft to rotate them.
