2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace a Neutral Safety Switch on 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before removing the transmission range sensor, disconnect the battery cables, move the air cleaner assembly, battery hold down clamp and battery out of the way. After that, remove the battery tray and take out the gearshift cable attached to the manual valve lever before freeing the lever. Disconnect the sensor wire for the transmission range and then hoist the car. Work counterclockwise to remove the bolts that hold the oil pan, then unscrew the oil filter and pull the pan from the bottom. After removing the bolts that join the valve body and the transaxle case, turn the manual lever completely clockwise to low or first gear to make removing the valve body easy. Be gentle as you remove the park rod rollers from the guide bracket and then take out the valve body so you don't damage the manual shaft pilot. Pull out the manual shaft seal and the retaining screw for the TRS, then slide the transmission range sensor up the shaft and remove it. To begin installation, place the new transmission range sensor and tighten the holding screw to 5 Nm (45 inch lbs.). Put in the manual shaft seal before guiding the park rod rollers in the guide bracket and then attaching the valve body to the transaxle case. Fix the bolts between the valve body and case and tighten them to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Next, install the oil filter and check the O-ring for damage. Put an 1/8 inch bead of RTV in place, then secure the oil pan with its bolts tightened to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.). Bring the vehicle down, set the transmission range sensor connector and replace the manual valve lever and gear shift cable. To finish, install the battery tray and battery, close the hold down clamp and assemble the air cleaner. Then, attach the wires from the battery to their posts and finally, correctly fill the transaxle with ATF +4 (Fluid 9602).
