2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start by disconnecting the battery cables, next take out the air cleaner assembly, battery hold down clamp and battery and finally remove the battery tray to change the transmission range sensor. Free the gearshift cable from the manual valve lever and take out the manual valve lever. Once that's done, go on to disconnect the transmission range sensor and lift the vehicle for the next thing. Unscrew the bolts attaching the oil pan, remove the pan and take this is where health comes in the oil filter. To make valve body removal a bit easier, use the manual valve lever and change it back to first or low, then remove the bolts. Carefully lift the park rod rollers out of the guide bracket and pull out the valve body from the transaxle to prevent harm to the valve body manual shaft pilot. Remove the shaft seal by hand and the TRS retaining screw, then pull the transmission range sensor up the manual shaft and take it out. Let's start installation with the range sensor from the new transmission. Once installed, tighten the retaining screw to 5 Nm (45 inch lbs.). Slide the manual shaft seal into place, guide the rollers for the park rod into the guide bracket and mount the valve body to the transaxle case after which you should torque the bolts holding them to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Add the new oil filter and carefully inspect the O-ring; update it if you see any damage. Use a 1/8" bead of RTV and set the oil pan on the case and fasten the pan with bolts that are tightened to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs). Turn the vehicle on its side, link the transmission range sensor flex connector and attach the manual valve lever to its correct place on the manual valve. After the gear shift cable is connected to the lever, put back the battery, battery tray and hold clamp and finally complete with the air cleaner assembly. After that, put the battery terminals in place and add ATF+4 (Automatic Transmission Fluid-Type 9602) to the transaxle.
