2005 Dodge Dakota Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain the Drive Belt on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first thing to do when working on the accessory drive on 3.7L/4.7L models is to disconnect the negative battery cable. Till the belt tensioner is near the stop, then take out the belt and bring the tensioner back to its unattached position. During installation, see that all the pulleys are fine and check that the serpentine accessory drive belt is fed in the correct way to avoid engine overheating because of incorrect water pump rotation. Run the belt around every pulley apart from the idler. Turn the tensioner arm until it comes into contact with its stop, guide the belt over the idler and follow by pressing the tensioner on the belt to fix it into place on every pulley. Check the belt wear indicator in the end; 4.7L engines should have no more than 24 mm (0.94 inches) between the tang and the housing stop; if this distance is greater, change the belt.
