2004 Dodge Dakota Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Harmonic Balancer and Crankshaft Pulley on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: Begin the service and repair by connecting the negative cable from the battery and taking off the accessory drive belt. Drain the cooling system, pick up the radiator's top hose and remove the upper fan shroud. The fan and viscous part on the water pump are held together, so first use the 6958 spanner with the special adapter pins to take the two apart as you loosen them from the water pump. Next, get the assembly out, remove its connector from inside the radiator shroud, noting that the transmission cooler line snaps into the shroud's lower right-hand corner. After that, detach the crankshaft damper bolt by following with Special Tool 8513 Insert and Special Tool 1026 Three Jaw Puller. Always ensure the damper bore and the crankshaft nose are clean before fitting the damper, so damage is not likely to happen. Position the slot in the crankshaft damper with the key in the crankshaft, then push it onto the crankshaft by a small amount. Take Special Tool 8512-A, place the nut on the shaft, put the roller bearing on the rod hardened surface towards the nut and slide the hardened washer onto the rod. Thread the rod with Mopar Nickel AntiSeize (or another protective adhesive) and fit the Special Tool 8512-A onto the press to install the damper. Insert and tighten the crankshaft damper bolt to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) after that install the fan blade assembly. Attach the radiator upper shroud, tighten its screws to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.), plug the fan connector into the shroud and install the upper radiator hose and accessory drive belt. After that, fill the cooling system and reattach the negative cable to the battery.
