2005 Dodge Dakota Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Harmonic Balancer on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first step to servicing and repairing the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley is to remove the negative terminal from the battery, disconnect the radiator fan and take away the accessory drive belt. Then, unfasten the damper's hold-down bolt with Special Tool 8513 and remove it with Special Tool 1027. Cleans the damper bore and the crankshaft nose before installing the damper to stop possible major damage. Line up the space on the crankshaft damper with the key on the crankshaft and put the damper into place slightly. Attach Special Tool 8512-A by first screwing the nut onto the bolt, fitting the external roller bearing on the rod with its hardened part facing the nut and placing the hardened washer so it goes on the rod. Apply Mopar(R) Nickel Anti-Seize or an identical product to the threads of the threaded rod. Attach Special Tool 8512-A to press the damper onto the crankshaft and tighten the bolt by hand or with a torque wrench to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.). Now, put back the radiator fan, the accessory drive belt and plug the negative battery cable.
