2004 Dodge Dakota Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: Drain any power steering fluid that's left in the pump and follow that by locking the steering wheel. Support and hold the vehicle in the air, take off the front wheels and unscrew the nuts from the tie rod ends. Remove the tie rod ends from the knuckles by using Puller C-3484-A and afterwards take the power steering lines away from the rack and pinion. After this, separate the lower coupler bolt, then pull the coupler out and unscrew the best bolts that were securing the rack and pinion to the front cross member. Before fitting the new parts, check the bushings and change out the bad ones. Position the rack and pinion on the front crossmember and screw in the bolts to 271 Nm (200 ft. lbs.). Set the shaft coupler in place, add a new bolt and tighten it until it reaches 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Remove grime from the tie rod end stud and the knuckle taper, place the tie rod ends into the steering knuckles and tighten the nuts to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Put the power steering lines back onto the rack and pinion and fasten them to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) of torque. Insert the front tires, take out the support, have the vehicle placed on the ground, release the lock on the steering wheel, fill the fluid system and correct the toe angle.
