2005 Dodge Dakota Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Remove as much power steering fluid as you are able from the pump and lock the steering wheel for the service and repairs. Lift the car and take out the front tires. Take off the nuts from the tie rod ends and pull the tie rod ends out of the knuckles using Puller C3894-A. After that, remove the pinch bolt for the rack and pinion and take out the lower steering coupling too. Pilots should turn the rack and pinion to face the furthest right to make sure the hoses are not compromised and the O-rings are kept safe. After the power steering lines are removed, take out the bolts and nuts that hold the rack and pinion to your gearbox. For clearance, angle the rack and pinion in front and then tilt it to the right side; afterward, tilt it downward on the left side to take it out. Examine the bushings on the frame before putting on the new equipment. Change the bushings if they look damaged or worn. Install all the equipment to the vehicle and tighten each mounting nut and bolt to 258 Nm. Join the steering lines to the gearbox and ensure that the pressure hose is tightened to 31 Nm and the return hose to 37 Nm. Slide the shaft coupler over the rack and pinion, insert a new bolt and tighten it to 49 Nm. Clean the tie rod end studs and the knuckle tapers, then push in the tie rod ends and tighten the nuts by hand with 75 Nm of force. Wheels are portable, so after inflating your spare, simply reinstall the front tires, remove the support and lower the vehicle. Take off the steering wheel lock, add oil to the system and move the toe position.
