How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal on 2004 Dodge Durango?

Initially, the transmission must be removed if you are working inside the vehicle, then proceed to the flexplate after that. An oil seal removed from the crankshaft cannot be reused. Insert Special Tool 8506 into the crankshaft rear oil seal and tighten it until it won't turn anymore, since removing it too soon could break the oil seal. To install, smear oil on the crankshaft flange, fit Special Tool 8349-2 onto the crankshaft rear face and place the new crankshaft oil seal on top of the guide. Hold Special Tool 8349 and C-4171 Driver Handle together and tap the seal until it seats down against the cylinder block crankshaft bore. Once you have buttoned up the engine, bolt the flexplate and transmission back in place.
