2004 Dodge Durango Intake Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: To start service and repair on the intake and exhaust valves, the first step is to remove the cylinder heads, plus both the rocker arms and lash adjusters. Once that is complete, remove the camshaft bearing caps as well as the camshaft. Join your valve spring compressor to the adaptor provided with your cylinder head and press the compressor down onto the valve spring, tapping the top with great caution if the spring retainer locks are stuck. Be careful when lifting the lock half retainer of the spring compressor because it will be tense. When the valve spring compressor comes off, unfasten the spring retainer and spring and make sure there are no sharp edges in the keeper grooves. If there are, then smooth the burrs on the valve stem and remove the valve from the head. Since intake and exhaust valve seals are the same, change them and mark the valve for precise installation again. The valves should be checked at the time they are removed to decide whether the valve springs can be used again. Have a technician check for wear or damage and then use C-647 to position the surface at 40.12 mm, gently compress the spring and pull on the wrench to listen for a ping, recording and doubling the reading for the spring load at test length. If the spring does not meet the required guidelines, replace it. Before assembling, rub some clean oil onto the valve stem, pass it through the cylinder head and seal it with the valve stem seal, properly seating it with its garter spring. Next, add the spring and the spring retainer, squeeze the spring into place with the special compressor and finish by installing the two halves of the valve spring retainer. Unclamp the compressor and make sure all the parts are well in place. Apply engine oil to the camshaft journal, put the left camshaft sprocket dowel at 11 o'clock and the right camshaft at 12 o'clock and place the camshaft bearing caps. In the end, attach the retaining bolts of the camshaft bearing cap as needed, tightening them in the ordered sequence to 9 - 13 Nm with each half turn. Following that, position both the hydraulic lash adjusters and rocker arms.
