Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Chain on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: Start by taking off the negative cable from the battery and emptying out the cooling system to service and repair the timing chain. Unbolt and lift off both cylinder head covers, remove the radiator fan and turn the engine until the timing mark on the crankshaft/damper matches the mark on the timing chain cover. Place the "V6" marks on the camshaft sprocket so that they point to 12 o'clock. Take off the power steering pump, gain access to the oil fill housing and cylinder head plugs and cover the timing chain opening in the pan to keep debris away. Once the secondary chain tensioners, camshaft position sensor and camshaft sprocket bolts have been removed, do not damage the camshaft target wheel. Eliminate the sprockets on the left and right of the engine using Special Tool 8428, unscrew the bolt holding the idler sprocket assembly and move that assembly and its chain sprocket forward to take out the primary and secondary chains, the tensioner arms and the chain guides and the primary chain tensioner. Look for any signs of wear on the sprockets, on the idler sprocket assembly, on chain guides and tensioners and for marks on both front and back chain tensioner pistons. When ready to install, press the secondary chain tensioner piston, release the ratchet pawl, fit the primary chain tensioner over the oil pump and screw on the bolts to 28 Nm. Put on the right side chain tensioner arm and left side chain guide, tightening them to 28 Nm and then place the left side chain tensioner arm and right side chain guide, also tightening them. After both secondary chains are mounted to the idler sprocket, combine the two plated links, then position both the primary and secondary links according to timing marks. Coat the idler shaft, its bushings and all chains with oil, then fit the crank sprocket, idler sprocket and idler assembly retaining bolt, aiming for alignment and using 34 Nm of torque on the belt tensioning bolt. Place the left and right camshaft sprockets onto the plated links, clean off the extra oil from the bolts on the camshaft sprockets and fasten both sprockets to the camshafts without tightening them. Measure that all links are aligned and connect the secondary chain tensioners with 28 Nm of torque on each bolt. Release the locking pins from the tensioners without pushing them, then use Special Tool 6958 to tighten the left and right camshaft sprocket bolts to 122 Nm. Turn the engine 360 degrees two times and check that the timing marks are in the proper places. Lubricate every chain, check how loose the idler gear is and replace the idler gear if that's needed. After that, attach the timing chain cover, crankshaft damper, the cylinder head covers and close with Mopar Thread Sealant the threaded plug in one of the cylinder heads before tightening everything. Add the oil fill housing, place the left cylinder head access plug, put the power steering pump in place, fill the cooling system and rejoin the negative cable to the battery.
