2005 Dodge Durango Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2005 Dodge Durango?
A: Start by detaching the negative battery cable and letting out the cooling system's content to service the timing cover. Get rid of the electric cooling fan and its bracket, along with the radiator fan. Lift up the timing cover and take off the heater hoses where they hook up. Do the same with the lower radiator hose at the engine. After that, take out the accessory belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. Be aware that an anerobic sealant is used instead of a gasket on the 3.7L engine and RTV type sealant from Mopar(R) Grey must be used for any sealing service. The water pump does not have to be taken off for you to remove the timing cover. Loose the bolts on the timing cover and then take the cover off. When installing the timing chain, wipe the cover and block surface with rubbing alcohol to avoid problems from oil or rough tools and materials. Inspect the O-rings (2) in the tube section of the water passage and change them if there is any damage. Lay a 3-4 mm bead of Mopar RTV sealer on the front cover surface and install the cover with all 4 fasteners tightened to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Fix the rolling crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner in place. Attach the upper and lower radiator hoses, both heater hoses and the radiator fan as well. In the end, top up the coolant and then reconnect the battery negative cable.
