2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: For each spark plug, a mounting nut holds an individual ignition coil into its machined hole in the cylinder head. Beneath each coil, a rubber boot seals the spark plug, allowing a spring for contact and an O-ring seals the coil at the opening in the cylinder head. You might have to remove the throttle body air tube or the intake box to remove a coil. Push the release lock down and carefully remove the electrical connector from the coil. Shoot compressed air through the area at the base of the coil first, then take out the coil mounting nut from the stud. Travel your coil threading tool back and forth along the coil in the cylinder head to release it and then take the coil out of the vehicle. For the installation, give the spark plug top a clean with compressed air and look at the coil O-ring, exchanging it when it looks worn out. Use a little silicone on the O-ring, fit the ignition coil into place in the cylinder head and apply pressure to get the top of the coil over the stud and onto the spark plug. Set the coil mounting stud nut following torque instructions and attach the electrical connector by snapping it in. You may need to insert the throttle body air tube again, if that is required.
