2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: A spark plug responds to energy from an individual ignition coil that fits in a machined hole in the head and fastens using a stud and nut to the top intake manifold. On the base of the coil, a rubber boot covers the spark plug and a spring inside it makes a physical link between the coil and the spark plug. Rubber boots and springs are present in the coil and never need to be serviced and an O-ring seals off the coil where it fits into the cylinder head. In some cases, you will need to take off the throttle body air intake tube or box to access the coil. Press down on the release lock and then pull the electrical connector off the coil away from you. Blow air through compressed air on the space beneath the coil before taking off the coil mounting nut from the stud. With a little twisting, carefully take out the coil from the hole in the cylinder head and lift it out of the vehicle. To install, blow away any dirt or particles from the spark plug using compressed air and see if the coil O-ring can stand inspection. If it is damaged, replace it. Before fitting, cover the coil O-ring with silicone, set the coil into the cylinder head hole and fit the spark plug first, moving the base of the coil over the stud. Secure the stud nut to the mounting coil into place with the torque the manufacturer outlined, attach the electrical connector to the coil and if the air tube is missing, reinstall it on the throttle body.
