2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Alternator on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Be sure to remove the negative battery cable before trying to service or repair the alternator. Following the instructions for the Cooling System, remove the generator drive belt. Open the cable protector cover on the B+ stud and separate the 2-wire connection at the generator's back. After that, use the bolts meant for the engine to remove the generator from the car. To mount the generator, place it at the engine and put in the bolts to hold it there, tightening each as specified: the vertical mounting bolt for the 4.7L at 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.), long horizontal one for the 4.7L at 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.), short horizontal one for the 4.7L at 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.), the rest for the 4.0L at 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) and B+ terminal Fasten the 2-wire field connector into the back of the generator and put the cable protector cover over the B+ mounting stud. Never use a screwdriver to help a belt over a pulley rim, because it could harm the fiber of the synthetic belt and make sure the serpentine accessory drive belt is routed properly so the water pump doesn't rotate the wrong way and cause engine overheating. Afterwards, set the generator drive belt in place and attach the negative battery cable again.
