2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Battery Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service Battery Cables in a Wire Harness on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: If either of the two wires in the battery wire harness is not working properly, you must exchange the entire connection system. To start, turn the ignition switch OFF and check that every electrical accessory is turned off. Relax the negative cable terminal clamp pinch-bolt hex nut and remove the clamp from the battery negative post end, using the puller tool if it is needed. Use the same steps to install the positive cable on the battery. Release the nuts from the Power Distribution Center (PDC) that join the battery positive and generator output eyelet terminals to the B(+) terminal studs. Next, take out the two cables. Remove the wire harness connector from the right headlamp and the connector between the dash and battery at the right front end. Take out the screw connecting the negative cable terminal on the battery to the inner fender shield and for cars with a 4.7L engine, remove the nut at the right stud on the intake manifold to remove the battery harness clip. Lift up and release the generator cover, remove the nut that secures the wire eyelet and then remove the battery wire harness connector from the end of the generator field terminal receptacle. Release the screw holding the negative side of the battery negative cable to the engine block just to the right, unfasten the nut on the starter solenoid terminal, then remove the starter wire harness connector from the B(+) terminal stud. Pull the battery wire harness out of the engine compartment. To install the car, first clean and inspect the battery cable terminals, insert the battery wire harness into the engine room and then join the connector to the starter solenoid. Attach the positive cable eyelet terminal to the B(+) stud on the starter solenoid and screw it in to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Secure the negative cable ground eyelet terminal to the engine block with a 10.2 Nm (90 in. lbs.) torque for 4.0L engines and 13.0 Nm (115 in. lbs.) torque for 4.7L engines. Link the battery wire harness connector to the generator field terminal connector, fit the eyelet terminal onto the generator output terminal stud and tighten the nut to 10.7 Nm (95 in. lbs. ). Set and attach the cover for the output terminal stud housing in the right location. Secure the battery harness clip on the stud protruding from the intake manifold of 4.7L models and tighten it by finger with a nut to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Tighten the negative battery cable eyelet terminal onto the inner fender shield to 28.2 Nm (250 in. lbs.) and then attach the battery wire harness connector to both headlamp connectors. Place the positive battery cable and the generator output cable eyelet terminal onto the PDC B(+) studs and tighten the nuts to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Shut and lock the cover, join the positive cable terminal clamp to the battery positive terminal and tighten the pinch-bolt hex nut to 6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.). Afterwards, adjust the battery negative cable terminal clamp to the negative battery terminal post, tighten the hex nut to a torque of 6.8 Nm (60 in. lbs.) and coat the exposed battery terminal clamps and posts with petroleum jelly or chassis grease.
