2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Suspension Ball Joint on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, lift and support the vehicle and then support the rear axle using a hydraulic jack for the service. Loosen the ball joint nut at the top of the upper arm, then tug the ball joint out with Remover 8278 and hit the upper control arm with a hammer if you must. After that, remove the bolts holding the ball joint mounting to the differential housing and take the ball joint from the housing. Install the ball joint by fitting it onto the differential housing and hold it in place with the bolts, tightening these to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Hold the rear end up using the jack to ensure the upper arm is flat with the ball joint. Then, attach the arm to the rod on the stud by pulling and screw tight a new bolt to 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.). At the last stage, take away the supports and gently move the vehicle down.
