2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Removing the hub bearing and axle shaft must be done before you can carry out the ball stud service on the steering knuckle. To remove or install the upper and lower ball studs, use Tool Kit 6289. Remove the tie-rod or drag link from the steering knuckle arm and then take out the cotter pins from and remove the nuts of both upper and lower ball studs. Beat the steering knuckle from the ball studs using the brass hammer and after that, take off the knuckle. Fit the steering knuckle around the ball studs and apply 109 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) torque to the bottom retaining nut. Afterwards, slide a new cotter pin through the holes to secure it. After that, tighten the top retaining nut to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) torque and add another new cotter pin. The last step is to replace the hub bearing and axle shaft, then join the tie-rod or drag link end to the steering knuckle arm.
