Q: How to Maintain Battery Cables on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before you work on the battery cables, turn off the ignition and switch off all the electrical accessories. Unhook the battery negative cable terminal clamp from the negative terminal post using a battery terminal puller, if you need it. Remove the clamp cover from the battery positive cable terminal, reach the hex nut and use a battery terminal puller to remove the terminal from the positive post. Unscrew the negative battery cable eyelet terminal from the inner fender and after that, lift and unlock the cover on the Power Distribution Center and Integrated Power Module. First, remove the nuts that hold the battery positive cable eyelet terminal to the B(+) terminal studs in the PDC, next, remove the nut from the IPM's B(+) terminal stud and finish by taking off both eyelet terminals. Take out the three pin connector from the harness at the battery and unplug it from the battery tray. In these engine sizes, unscrew the nut that holds the generator cable eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal stud and then disconnect the battery wire harness connector from the generator field terminal connector receptacle. Any 5.7L engine requires you to use the appropriate generator output cable with the given steps. Put the vehicle on a hoist and disconnect the bolt and nut attaching the battery's negative and positive cables, respectively, to the starter solenoid studs. Once done, pull apart the wire harness that links the starter solenoid to the battery's positive cable. Disconnect the retaining clips from the battery wire harness at the engine and remove the whole wire harness from the compartment. First, ensure the battery cable clamps and terminal posts are clean and undamaged. After that, fit the battery wire harness into the vehicle body, raise it on a hoist and move it into position on the vehicle's body. Screw the retaining clips for the battery wire harness onto the engine, link the battery wire harness connector to the starter solenoid and attach the positive battery cable eyelet terminal to the B(+) terminal stud of the starter solenoid, tightening the nut to 10.75 Nm. Loosen the negative (ground) terminal cable from the battery, join it to the engine block and tighten the attached bolt to 10.75 Nm, then lower the vehicle. Loosen the valve cover stud bolts, slide the battery retaining clips onto the studs, tighten the generator field terminal connector to the battery wire harness, attach the generator eyelet terminal to the generator output terminal stud and finish by tightening the nut to 14 Nm. For 3.7L and 4.7L engines, join the battery wire harness connector to the generator field terminal connector and attach both with an eye cable terminal tightened to 14 Nm. Slide the battery wire harness retaining clip onto the stud on the valve cover and mount the three pin connector on the battery tray. Put one battery positive cable road connector onto the positive terminal stud in the PDC and the other onto the positive terminal stud in the IPM and screw them on until the nuts reach 11.5 Nm. Clamp and latch the caps on the PDC and IPM. Then mount the screw fastening the battery negative eyelet to the inner fender and tighten it to 28.2 Nm. Press on the battery's negative cable terminal clamp to the negative terminal post, tightening the hex nut until it registers 5.6 Nm and then fit the cover onto it. Leaving the vehicle in Park, link the battery negative cable end to the negative terminal, tighten the antenna bolt to 5.6 Nm and cover the observed battery cable terminal clamps and posts with a bit of petroleum jelly or chassis grease.
