Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before disconnecting the camshaft, you should first release the battery power and coolant from the system. After that, uninstall the A/C radiator and its counterpart condenser and then remove the engine cylinder head cover, rocker arms, bridges, pivots, push rods, engine cylinder head and gasket, hydraulic valve tappets from the bottom of the engine cylinder block, vibration damper and timing case cover. Spin the crankshaft until the marks on their sprockets line up, remove everything and slide out the timing chain to avoid shortening it. Should you need to, take out the front bumper and grille, unlatch the thrust plate retaining screws, chuck out the thrust plate and take the camshaft off. For inspection purposes, verify the camshaft lobes and the drive gear of its sensor for signs of wear and clean the oil pressure relief holes behind the rear cams if you observe the thrust washer might be damaged. You should use Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or an equivalent for lubrication, ensure the camshaft doesn't touch the bearings, place the thrust plate and seal it in place with the retaining screws to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) of force. Apply new lubricant, then snap in the camshaft sprocket, the crankshaft sprocket and the timing chain. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). The timing chain needs to be checked after removing the crankshaft two full revolutions and bringing the camshaft sprocket mark into the correct position. Set in place the timing case cover equipped with an oil seal, next add the vibration damper, hydraulic valve tappets, the cylinder head gasket (with numbers facing up), the cylinder head, push rods, rocker arms and pivot and bridge assemblies, after which fit the engine cylinder head cover and serpentine drive belt. Apply Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or an equivalent product to the valve tappets and every valve part during installation and leave it mixed with the engine oil for up to 1609 km (1,000 miles), at which time the next oil change is required. Then, reattach the radiator, set or adjust the ignition timing as needed, set the grille and bumper in place if you removed them and secure the negative cable to the battery.
