2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Wipe the cylinder bore clean, insert the used or new ring in there and check the measurements, as the ring must be at least 12 mm (0.50 inch) away from the bottom of the cylinder bore. Slide the ring down with the piston so it is even and verify its end gap with a feeler gauge; then, change out any missing or worn-out rings. See that the piston ring passage is free of damage and then measure the clearance all the way around, with the feeler gauge fitting tightly between the ring land and the ring and discard or replace rings that aren't within specifications. Turn the ring around the piston to ensure there is no binding as it rotates in its groove and install the No. 2 ring with its manufacturer's mark (Dot) facing upwards. Set the oil ring expander in first, followed by the upper side rail (1), then the lower side rail and then the other two rings as I chaos. First, attach the oil ring expander, next, wedge the upper side rail into the groove between the piston ring and the expander, hold it down and make sure it fits; repeat this for the last side rail. When installing intermediate and upper piston rings, place the piston ring gaps at least 45° away from the place where the side rails or piston pin pass through using a piston ring installer, avoiding any placement in the direction the engine moves.
