2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Throttle Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Throttle Position Sensor on a 4.0L Engine on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Remove the electrical connector from the TPS and take out the two mounting screws to detach the TPS for later service of the 4.0L engine. When installing, snap the throttle shaft into the TPS socket and allow it to spin slightly; if the sensor doesn't twist, replace it with the throttle shaft pointing at the other set of tangs inside the socket. The TPS will feel a bit of tension when rotated. Affix the TPS and secure it in place with the retaining screws, but don't tighten them tighter than 7 N.m (60 in. lbs.) torque. After that, connect the TPS electrical connector and move the throttle manually to see if the TPS is binding before you start the engine.
