2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install an Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before you remove the ignition lock cylinder, the ignition key must be pushed into the key cylinder. To start, turn off the negative battery cable at the battery. If you're using an automatic car, make sure to engage the PARK position for the shifter. Set the key to ON, then spot the release tang in the cylinder at the bottom. Put a pin punch or small screwdriver into the hole in the bottom of the cover and then, using the pin punch, pull the steering wheel lock cylinder from the column. During installation, place the key in the ignition cylinder and move the shifter into PARK, if you have an automatic transmission. Position the key cylinder in the ON position inside the steering wheel column and press it until you hear it snap into place. Test the movement of the switch; in the case of an automatic, make sure the lever is held in PARK after you take the key out. Should you find it tough to twist the key or turn it off, you might need to adjust or replace the shift lever-to-steering column cable. When you have a manual transmission, always ensure the key cannot move until you press the release lever; if you are able to manage it by hand, the release lever mechanism may be damaged, so the steering column should be changed. After that, link the negative cable back to the battery and verify the electrical work of the switch.
