2004 Jeep Liberty Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Shift Cable for Park-Interlock Systems on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: Prior to servicing or repairing the park-interlock cable, drop the steering column. Keep your ignition on "RUN," press the tab on top of the cable connector where it connects at the steering column and pull the cable out straight. Pull out the park-interlock cable from the steering column and then get the floor console and related trim out. Take the park-interlock cable off of the shift lever assembly and take it out of the shifter assembly bracket. Remove the park-interlock cable from any holders holding it and take it out of the vehicle. The new park-interlock cable should only be installed once the gearshift cable is correctly secured and set. Make sure the park-interlock cable is fully inserted into the square mounting hole and a click or snap will signal it is in place. Wind the park-interlock cable tie strap into the steering column tube's hole and connect the cable to your shifter. Pull the cable through the hole in the shifter and fit the end of the cable into the fitting, then attach the ears of the cable adjuster to the bracket for the floor. Using the key cylinder, move the ignition switch to LOCK and press the adjuster lock clamp to tighten it. Try the park-interlock cable control and subsequently secure the floor console and its related trim.
