2004 Jeep Wrangler Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service a Clock Spring on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before handling the Clock Spring assembly on cars with air bags, shut off the supplementary restraint system by disconnecting and isolating the negative battery cable for two minutes to drain the system capacitor. A new Clock Spring is required if yours is faulty, damaged or has been used to inflate the driver air bag. Make sure the front wheels are facing forward and only then take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel. Remove the wires from both upper Clock Spring pigtail connectors on the speed control switches or the trim bezels in the spoke area. Lift out the steering wheel, then take away the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel. Take out the two screws holding the lower steering column shroud to the upper shroud and if your car includes a tilt steering column, bring it all the way down. Pick one of the upper shroud's sides and push gently inside, then release the snap with the other side and remove both shrouds. Separate the connector from the body wire harness of the Clock Spring from the receptacle beneath the steering column. Pry the plastic securing clips raising the Clock Spring off the upper part of your device and remove any broken debris. Extract the Clock Spring from the assembly above, then fasten the rotor onto the case if you are using it to keep the movement centered. When installing, set the Clock Spring in the center and the front wheels should still be aimed forward. Slide down the centered Clock Spring over the upper shaft of the steering column until both latches snap into place. Once done, plug in the body wire harness connectors, fasten the upper and lower shrouds and secure them together. Fix the lower shroud to the upper shroud using screws tightened to 2 N.m (18 in. lbs.). If your steering column tilts, raise it up as far as it goes and lock it. Seat the steering column opening cover, take the locking pin out of the new Clock Spring if it's present, insert the steering wheel, connect the wire connectors and then secure the driver air bag.
