2004 Jeep Wrangler Air Bag Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Should You Do When an Air Bag Deploys in a Collision on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Avoid performing any service or diagnostics relating to the steering wheel, steering column, air bags, seat belts, side curtain air bag or instrument panel after a collision until you have turned off the air bag system. Break the connection to the battery and isolate the negative cable, then allow the system capacitor two minutes to discharge. All deployed restraints must be changed when the vehicle is used again after they deploy for any reason. The Clock Spring needs to be replaced after the driver air bag goes off; for a passenger air bag, you need a new passenger air bag door if it has deployed. Chain tensioners located in the front seats need to be replaced if either front air bag has gone off. When a side curtain air bag deploys, the whole unit, along with the headliner and trim of the upper A, B and C-pillars, must be replaced since they are not designed for using again and can be damaged. Keep your skin, eyes and other sensitive areas safe while cleaning the powder from an air bag by wearing safety glasses, rubber gloves and a long-sleeved shirt all at the same time. Vacuum everything on the inside and outside of the car and remember to vacuum the heater and air conditioner outlets while the blower is on its lowest setting. Dispose of all air bags, whether deployed or just set up in the car, following the rules set by the state, province, local area and federal bodies and take out deployed air bags as set out in the professional service instructions. A further vacuuming inside the trunk may be needed to get rid of all the powder.
