2004 Jeep Wrangler Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Bearing on an Axle on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing the axle bearings, take out the axle shaft from the vehicle because sometimes the bearing race will move easily in the axle tube. Using a 3/8 inch drill bit, make a brief hole in the soft steel axle bearing retaining ring and make sure to stop before marking the axle. Chisel the retaining ring across the hole in the axle shaft and then slide the ring off the shaft. First, use a Press and Splitter 1130 to get rid of the axle bearing joing the shaft, then take out the seal and retaining plate from the axle shaft. Before you start, place a straight edge on the axle's retaining plate and replace it if it is warped. Attach the retaining plate to the axle, grease the surface where the seal comes in contact and install the seal on the axle so the cavity moves away from the retaining plate. Lubricate the bearing with Mopar Wheel Bearing Grease or an alternative and wipe away any surplus material from its exterior. Insert the bearing onto the axle shaft using Installer 7913 and a press, so that the groove close to the seal is facing outward. Afterwards, press the soft metal retaining ring onto the axle shaft with Installer 7913 and a press to reinstall the axle in your car.
