In Jeep Wrangler range the Wheel Bearing is an essential component that enhances the driveability of the vehicle and reduces friction, to enable the wheel and tire assembly to revolve freely. This component is exposed to rather high forces during operation and thus, it requires the use of high-quality materials and rather strong engineering solution to provide it failsafe. In different years of manufacturing Jeep Wrangler models, several types of Wheel Bearings have been used each of which was designed in relation to certain performance and standard of durability. The priority is on power and durability to guarantee that the Wheel Bearing will last in extreme conditions often found in off-road environment. Variations may be in its structure and components but all of them have the objective to protect and preserve the wheel system of Jeep Wrangler.

Jeep Wrangler Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service Wheel Bearings on a 216 RBI Rear Axle on Jeep Wrangler?
    A:
First, support the vehicle by raising it and remove the Axle Shaft. It is usual to find that the axle bearing race is loose within the axle tube. With a 3/8 inch drill and a depth guide, puncture a shallow hole into the soft steel axle bearing retaining ring so you do not damage the axle. Slice the retaining ring across its hole with a cold chisel and take it off the shaft. Press the axle bearing off the shaft by putting Splitter 1130 between the bearing and its seal, loosen both the seal and the retaining plate from the shaft using a press. Make sure the axle shaft retaining plate is flat and replace it if you notice it is warped. Place the retaining plate on the axle, grease the axle seal with multi-purpose grease and add the seal to the axle, so that its cavity is far from the retaining plate. Apply some Mopar Wheel Bearing Grease or the equivalent to the bearing, leaving a thin layer and removing any extra grease on the bearing's outside. With the aid of Installer 7913 and a press, fit the bearing on the shaft so its groove points toward the seal. Lastly, fit the soft metal retaining ring onto the axle shaft using a press and Installer 7913. Now slip the axle back into the vehicle.
