The first step to repair and service the piston rings is to remove the pistons and connecting rods, with the oil scraper ring taken out using just your hands instead of pliers. Take the piston rings out with piston ring pliers, taking care that the pistons do not get cut or scratched as you clean them. Clean the deposits out of the ring grooves either with a cleaner or with a broken ring and then examine the pistons for damage and discoloration at the pin locations and in the piston skirts. For installation, take the final cylinder measurement, ensuring that both rings are set back from one end by 0.20-0.35 mm (0.007-0.013 inch) for Ring # 1 and 0.20-0.40 mm (0.007-0.015 inch) for Ring # 2. Compare the vertical clearance of Rings 1 & 2; confirm that Ring 1 must be between 0.012 mm (0.0004 inch) and 0.060 mm (0.002 inch) and Ring 2 between 0.010 mm (0.0003 inch) and 0.030 mm (0.001 inch). Put the compression, sealing, oil and oil rail plus expander rings on the pistons in that sequence and check that the ring spacing is right. At this point, place back the pistons and connecting rods.
