2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Release Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Release Bearing on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The Clutch Release Bearing must be serviced or repaired after the transaxle has been taken out of the vehicle. Put the assembly in a vertical and in-line position, grab the release lever where it attaches to the pivot studs and release it by pulling in both directions so you don't need to use tools on the spring clip. Slowly lift the lever over the bearing so that you do not harm the retention tabs on the plate underneath. Check the bearing, since it comes lubricated and sealed, never immerse it in oil or solvent; it should turn easily with a light push and just a bit of resistance from the grease. Should the bearing feel rough or noise or be too dry to move, the whole bearing should be replaced. Look at the pivot stud spring clips at the rear of the clutch release lever and change the lever if they seem broken or misshapen. Before putting the lever on the bearing, spread grease onto the pivot ball pocket in the lever and the lever arms, then check that the bearing's small pegs go over each lever arm. Slip the bearing and lever assembly over the bearing retainer on the input shaft, hook the clutch release lever onto the pivot ball and remount the transaxle assembly.
