2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Torque Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a 40TE Torque Converter on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: You should start by removing the transmission and torque converter from the car, making sure a drain pan is supporting the converter housing end. Be sure that removing the unit will not cause it to be unstable, by double checking the security of the transmission or the table that supports the vehicle before lifting it. Slide the torque converter forward so that the center hub gets past the oil pump seal and divide them from the transmission. Before attachment, scan the converter hub and drive notches for sharp corners or scratches, buff away any problems and use 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth to remove any marks if you have to. Use transmission fluid to grease the converter hub and oil pump seal lip and be sure not to harm the oil pump seal or bushing when placing the torque converter on the transmission. Make sure the torque converter is lined up with the oil pump seal opening, feed the hub into place in the pump and as you push the converter closer to the pump, keep turning it until it settles in the oil pump gears. Place a scale and straightedge together on the converter, checking that the seating position of the converter lugs is 1/2 inch towards the back or rear of the edge around the hole. Should C-clamps be needed, attach one to the converter in its housing, install the transmission and add the recommended fluid.
