2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to change an Automatic Transmission Filter on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Check the recommended service schedules to know when you need to change your car's fluid and filter. Make sure to use only Mopar ATF+4 for your transmission maintenance and be sure to replace the filter at the same time, while cleaning the magnet in the oil pan with a clean cloth. If the transaxle is removed, pull out the fluid and put in a new filter. First, lift the vehicle using a hoist and put a drain container under the transaxle oil pan. While you undo the bolts on the pan, lightly tap one corner so the pan breaks free and the excess fluid can drain, before taking it off. Install fresh filters and O-rings on the bottom of the valve body, clean the oil pan and magnet and put the pan back in using fresh Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant, with each bolt tightened to 19 Nm. Add four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through the dipstick opening, turn the engine on and let it run for one minute. With the brakes on, shift the selector lever briefly through every level, then stop it in park or neutral. Examine the level of transaxle fluid and replenish it until there is 3 mm (1/8 inch) of fluid below the lowest line on the dipstick. Then check the level again after the transaxle reaches 180°F. Push the dipstick in firmly to seal the transaxle and stop problems caused by dirt. First, let the transaxle heat up properly, select a proper fluid suction device, push the suction tube into the dipstick tube and confirm it arrives at the lowest part of the oil pan. Use the manufacturer's instructions to take out the fluid, pull out the suction line, insert four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through the dipstick opening, fire up the engine and check the fluid level as you did in the first stage.
