2005 Chrysler Sebring Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Automatic Transmission Shifter in the 40TE Transaxle on 2005 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Before starting any repairs or service on the 40TE Automatic Transaxle, cut the negative battery power. Pull the fastener out of the gearshift knob, remove the knob and remove the gearshift bezel, making certain to unplug the range indicator lamp wire. After that, remove the center console assembly and loosen the nut connected to the shift cable adjust lever. Pull the shifter cable core off the shift lever pin with a flat blade tool and then pull up on the clip at the shifter bracket to take the cable out. Place a pointed item into the shift bracket to release the lock of the interlock cable adjuster and then pull the cable stud on the shifter out of the license plate holder. If you have the Autostick, disconnect its connector and remove the five bolts under the shifter to get it out of the car. To put the shifter mechanism back in place, tackle it with pan nuts that are fastened to 17 Nm (150 inch lbs.). Insert the gearshift cable into the conduit bracket and onto the shift pin, hold it in place with a retainer clip. Turn the cable adjuster nut until it measures 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.) and place the interlock cable core wire into the interlock adjustment lever groove to check that the interlock cable slug is properly seated. Insert the end of the interlock cable adjuster into the bracket and then adjust both cables as needed. When the cars come with Autostick, link the Autostick connector. Snap the center console back into place, connect the range lamp and drop the gearshift bezel in place. After that, install the gearshift knob, turning the set screw to 2 Nm (20 inch lbs.) and attach the negative battery cable.
