2005 Dodge Caravan Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an AWD Rear Wheel Speed Sensor on 2005 Dodge Caravan?
A: When dealing with the AWD rear wheel speed sensor, be sure to support the vehicle, avoid breaking the pins on electrical connectors and inspect connectors for any damage while detaching the speed sensor cable. Take out the grommet from the floor pan and disconnect the cable that goes to the speed sensor. Release the speed sensor cable from the clips on the brake hose and tubing by inserting a flathead screwdriver. Make sure not to harm the clips, since new hoses must be installed if they are damaged. Loose the wheel speed sensor cable connector bolt at the back of the rear axle and, if required, remove the metal clip from the cable. If corrosion has frozen the speed sensor head, hit the mounting flange from both sides with a hammer and punch, instead of using pliers. Unfasten the bolt securely joining the sensor to the axle, then remove the head of the wheel speed sensor from the axle. Put the retaining clips around the cables joining the wheel speed sensors, so they do not come too close to moving wheels or get pulled too far. First, lay the plastic anti-rotation pin into the bearing flange and secure the wheel speed sensor head in the axle flange with a bolt tightened firmly to 10 Nm (90 inch lbs.). Ensure that the air gap between the wheel sensor and the tone wheel remains correct and ensure the no-damage routing clips on the brake flex hose don't get broken when the speed sensor cable is installed. Using routing clips, secure the speed sensor cable under the leaf spring onto the brake hose and tubing. Then, install the metal routing clip on the speed sensor cable and secure it to the rear of the axle with a bolt tightened to 16 Nm (140 inch lbs.). Connect the cable of the wheel speed sensor to the correct point on the vehicle wiring harness. After that, attach the speed sensor cable grommet to the floor pan, bring the vehicle back down to the ground and perform a road test to ensure both base and ABS braking systems are operative.
