2005 Dodge Dakota Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a 9 1/4 Axle Shaft on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: When working on the rear axle with a 9 1/4 shaft, lift the vehicle on a hoist and place it in neutral. After removing the rear brakes, remove the housing cover and allow the differential to drain the lubricant. Rotate the differential case and locate the pinion mate shaft lock screw. After removing the screw, lift out the pinion mate shaft from the case along with it. Press the axle shaft toward the middle to take the C-lock off and then pull out the axle shaft. Put some gear lubricant on the bearing bore and seal lip before you slide the axle shaft past the seal and into the bearing and insert the axle shaft into the gear splines without damaging the seal. Pushing the axle laterally, fit the C-lock deep within the side gear so the axle is secured. Next, put the pinion shaft through the thrust washers and differential pinions seated in the differential case and join them by putting in the original lock screw, again with Loctite and tighten it to 11 Nm. At the last stage, secure the rear differential cover and slowly add some gear lubricant inside. Close the cover and add the rear brake items.
