2005 Dodge Dakota Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Thermostat in a 3.7L or 4.7L Engine on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: When changing the thermostat in a 3.7L or 4.7L engine, first check that it is right for your vehicle and engine. The first thing to do is release the negative battery cable and empty the cooling system. Lift the vehicle with a hoist and take out the splash shield. After that, loosen and take out the clamp on the lower radiator hose and unplug the hose from the thermostat housing. Unbolt the housing for the thermostat, the thermostat housing and the thermostat from the engine. Screen off the oil from the chain cover and thermostat housing before securing the thermostat with the spring side on the recessed machined groove. Set the thermostat housing on the timing chain cover and insert the two bolts, using 13 Nm (112 inch lbs.) of torque. Tighten the housing so it is even on both sides and place the thermostat in the middle of its recessed groove to keep the housing from cracking, the threads from getting damaged and coolant from leaking. Attach the bottom radiator hose to the thermostat housing again, drop the vehicle, top up the cooling system, screw in the negative battery connection and replace the splash shield. Make sure to turn on and warm the engine as you look for any leaking fluids.
