2005 Dodge Dakota Leaf Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Leaf Spring on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Raise the back of the car with a jack or hoist under the rail crossmember behind the axle so as not to bend the side rail flange while removing the leaf spring. After raising the vehicle at the frame, lift the axle using a hydraulic jack to take pressure off it. Take the assembly off the axle by removing the tire and wheel assembly, nuts (2), U-bolt (1) and spring plate (4). With the access hole (3) at the front of the spring where the plug has been removed, loosen the bolt (1) and flag nut through that hole in the bracket. After that, disconnect the nut and bolt (3) between the spring shackle (5) and rear frame bracket (4) and take out the spring (6). Pull apart the shackle (2) from the spring (6). For step one, tie your spring shackle (2) onto the end of the spring (6) so that it is only finger tight. Place the rear axle pad against the spring with the spring center bolt aligned with the pad's locating hole. Set the front spring eye (2) over the matching bolt hole in the front frame bracket, feed the spring eye bolt (1) and flag nut through the access hole in the frame (3) and bolt them in place using your fingers. Put the spring shackle eye where it matches the bolt hole in the rear frame bracket (4), insert the bolt (3) and nut and screw the nut loosely by hand onto the shackle. Assemble the U-bolt (1), the spring plate (4) and nuts (2) and tighten U-bolt nuts (2) to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.). Pull out the support stands from the frame rails and let the car lower so it now stands on the springs. Finally, lock the spring pivot bolt (1) and flag nut at 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.) and tighten the bolts and nuts on the upper and lower shackles to the same value.
