2004 Dodge Dakota Leaf Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Leaf Spring on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: Begin servicing or repairing the leaf spring by raising the rear of the vehicle, placing a jack or hoist under the frame rail crossmember behind the rear axle so it won't bend the side rail of the spring. Put the vehicle under the frame and release the axle stress by using a hydraulic jack. Remove both the wheel assembly and tire from the axle and then take out all nuts, U-bolts and the spring plate. Afterwards, get rid of the nut and bolt in the front eye of the spring, then the nut and bolt fixing the spring shackle to the rear frame bracket, then lift off the spring and the shackle from the vehicle together. You should start by fitting the spring shackle to the taut spring finger. Make sure the spring center bolt is in the locating hole of the rear axle pad as you position it on the pad. Place the spring eye over the bolt hole in the front bracket, attach and snug the bolt and nut and tighten the spring eye nut as much as you can with your fingers. Arrange the spring shackle eye with the bolt hole on the rear frame bracket; insert the bolt and nut and then tighten the eye of the spring shackle for now with your finger. After getting the spring seat, place the U-bolts, spring plate and nuts on the 4x4 version. After that, tighten the U-bolt nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) and mount the wheel and tire assemblies. Take off the support stands below the frame rails and lower the car until the springs take its weight. Lastly, turn the spring eye pivot bolt nut and all shackle nuts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
