How to maintain a tailgate handle on 2005 Dodge Dakota?

If there is a tailgate cover, first take it off so you can work on the mounting bolts of the tailgate handle. With the handle still up, take out the three screws that secure the tailgate handle. Lift the tailgate handle enough to make the tailgate latch links release from the clips. To install, slot the tailgate handle into the tailgate and hook the links of the latch back to their clips. Screw back in the three mounting screws for the tailgate handle and tighten them to 26 N.m (19 ft.lbs.). When the tailgate cover was removed, you should reinstall it following the tightening of its tailgate handle bolts.
