2005 Dodge Neon A/C Accumulator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the Role of the A/C Accumulator in Your HVAC System on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: To work on the accumulator, first bring the refrigerant back into the system and remove the negative battery cable. In some cases, relocate the vehicle speed control servo so that it's easier to access. Take the wire harness connector away from the A/C low pressure switch, then remove the two nuts holding the suction line fittings and toss out the ring seals in the fittings. Cover or seal the opened fittings and accumulator ports with plugs or tape, then take out the bolt holding the accumulator bracket to the frame and remove the accumulator. If it's necessary, unplug the A/C low pressure switch from the accumulator. When you add a new accumulator, put in 30 milli-liters (1 fluid ounce) of the refrigerant oil. Should you remove the low-pressure switch, put a new O-ring on it and then install it firmly onto the accumulator. Set the accumulator in its original spot in the engine compartment and bolt it using an 11 Nm (97 in. lbs.) torque wrench. After removing tapes or plugs from the fittings, clean new O-ring seals by using clean refrigerant oil and fit them in place on your R-134a system suction line fittings. Attach the suction line fittings again to the accumulator and secure them with nuts, turning each to 2.3 Nm (20 in. lbs.), to complete the service. Link the wire harness to the A/C low pressure switch, add back the vehicle speed control servo if it applies, reconnect the negative battery terminal, empty all the refrigerant and after that refill it.
