2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Clock Spring Assembly on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you begin work, make sure the steering wheel is straight and that you remove and wait two minutes after disconnecting the negative battery cable. Take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel and remove the connectors from the steering wheel wire harness at the top Clock Spring connectors. Take out the steering wheel, checking that the screws on the puller do not cause any harm to the Clock Spring. After that, open the steering column cover, undo the two outboard screws holding the upper shroud and push carefully on each side to release the snaps. Unscrew the center screw on the lower shroud, then take apart the two instrument panel harnasess from the Clock Spring housing. Remove the two screws attaching the Clock Spring to the multi-function switch mounting housing, then get rid of the Clock Spring and replace it if it's damaged or if the air bag went off. If you reuse the Clock Spring, place the rotor on the shaft to keep it central. As you install the Clock Spring, place it in the center and slide it onto the steering column, so that the locating tab lines up with the pin on the multi-function switch mounting housing. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (20 in.lbs.), put back the harness for the instrument panel and clamp down the lower shroud, centering the screw. After you attach the upper shroud, check if you should use the gearshift lever gap hider, then snap the shrouds together and tighten the outboard screws. Place the tilt steering column knob, steering column cover and remove any included plastic locking pin if you have a new Clock Spring. After replacing the steering wheel, line up the yellow rubber booted engagement dowel, fasten the steering wheel wire harness, re-install the driver's air bag and again reconnect the negative battery cable.
