Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft Seal on 2005 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Disconnect the terminal cables from the battery negative pole prior to servicing the seal of the crankshaft main bearing. When a manual transmission is installed, take out the transmission, the transfer case if it's there and then the clutch cover and disc. Then, remove the flywheel or converter drive plate and if you have a late build, take out the flywheel adapter plate. Drill 180° apart into the seal, so the drill does not touch the crankshaft, add #10 sheet metal screws into the holes and take out the rear seal with a slide hammer. Just before installation, dry the seal lip and crankshaft sealing surface thoroughly, since both should be free of oil. Use a mixture of soap and water around the outside ring of the seal to help you fit it properly. Spray the crankshaft journal with a good solvent and use a clean shop towel or compressed air to dry it, before wiping the inner area of the seal retainer. Check the crankshaft journal for blemishes or damage; if the seal groove is undersize, either install the seal 1/8" deeper or replace the end with a wear sleeve you can buy separately. After putting on the replacement's seal pilot and seal, unscrew the seal pilot again. Strike the alignment tool over the crankshaft at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock places with a ball peen hammer until it touches the retainer. Remount the flywheel or converter drive plate after tightening the bolts to 137 Nm (101 ft. lbs.) and if the car has a clutch, completes the reinstallation of the model's clutch cover and disc. Link the transmission and transfer case again if they are there, bring the vehicle down, attach the negative cables back to the battery, check the oil level and fix it if too high or low, then run the engine and examine for oil leaks.
