2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Lash Adjusters on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: For service and repair of the tappets, remove the camshaft first and put the trough in, right on top of the entire camshaft bore, with the cap end pointing towards the tappets, open side up. Remove each tappet individually by loosening the rubber band from one set of cylinders, moving it to the next set and placing the tappet dowel on the tappet of those cylinders. Press the rod to move the tappet into the trough so the spark plug fires in the next revolution. Remove the trough gradually and watch that it doesn't turn, so when you replace the tappet it will go into the same hole. Reinstall the trough (1) and then take the second tappet through the steps mentioned. Dip each tappet into the right solvent, wash off the residue in hot water and then dry it with either a shop rag or compressed air. Look over the tappet, tappet socket, stem and face for serious wear, cracks or damage, then measure the stem diameter; if it's smaller than the minimum size, change the stem. This time, line up the cap end of the trough (1) with the opening side up in the camshaft bore. Guide the tappet installation tool through the push rod hole into the trough, then use the hooked rod from the kit to take it out, add oil to the tappet and set it onto the installation tool. Lift the tappet until it lines up and wiggle the trough a little if this helps it turn into the tappet bore. With everything set, position the trough one half turn, opening it towards the crankshaft; remove the tappet tool; reinstall a dowel rod held together with a rubber band; turn the trough another half turn, then perform these actions again for the other tappets; secure the camshaft in place only after all other tappets have been installed.
