2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle in a Front-Independent Front Suspension on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The first step to service or replace the steering knuckle on a front-independent front suspension is to support the vehicle, remove the wheel and tire and then loosen the knuckle. After that, remove the brake caliper, rotor, shield and ABS wheel speed sensor from the rear of the vehicle. Wherever possible, after the front halfshaft nut, take out the tie rod end nut, then detach the tie rod from the knuckle with Remover 8677 to avoid damaging the ball joint seal during the procedure. First, take out the lower ball joint nut, separate the ball joint from the knuckle with Remover 8677 and afterwards, repeat this step with the upper joint nut. Then, take the hub/bearing off the steering knuckle. During installation, be sure the stud tapers are clean and dry; if they are not, clean them with mineral spirits. Place the speed sensor opening of the hub/bearing in the front location while installing it with ABS brakes. Attach the hub/bearing to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.) if it's a LD or 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) if it's a HD 4X2 steering knuckle. Link the knuckle to both the upper and lower ball joints and torque the upper and lower ball joint nuts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) and 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.) for LD or 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) for HD 4X2. Remember that the 1500 series needs an extra 90° of tightening. Take off the hydraulic jack, put the tie rod end in place and tighten its nut with 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) of force. Should the vehicle be so equipped, put the front halfshaft into the hub/bearing and tighten its nut to a maximum of 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). After that, put back the rotor, brake shield, wheel speed sensor and caliper and then install the wheel and tire assembly. After that, take out the support, lower the car and do a wheel alignment.
