2005 Dodge Stratus A/C Clutch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the A/C Clutch on a Turbo Engine on 2005 Dodge Stratus?
A: Prior to servicing the A/C compressor clutch on a turbo, first remove the accessory drive belt and lift the car afterwards. Disconnect the yellow wire harness from the clutch field coil and remove both bolts holding the compressor to the mounting bracket. Hold the clutch plate still with Special Tool 6462 while you service the clutch and remove the clutch nut with Kit 6460. Use Special Tool 6461 included in Kit 6460 to take out the clutch plate and shims attached to the compressor shaft. Grab the pulley and bearing assembly with the snap ring tool from Kit 6125 and set the groove on Special Tool 6141-1 into it. After that, install the shaft protector in Kit 6125. The puller bolts from Tool 6461 should be removed from the box and tightened into the puller flange with the pulley and bearing assembly in place, prior to turning the puller center-bolt to remove the assembly. Take out the screw fastening the clutch coil wire harness retainer clip to the compressor front housing and remove the snap ring fastening the A/C clutch field coil before you remove the coil. Put the A/C clutch field coil on the compressor front housing and install the snap ring with pliers for its retaining screw, yet not to damage the wire harness during tightening. Set the pulley and bearing on the hub of the front housing and lock them into place using Special Tool 6871 to avoid possible clutch breakdown. Guarantee that the wire from the clutch field coil is more than half an inch from the clutch pulley, then set the shims in place. Install the clutch plate with Kit 6460's Special Tool 6463, tapping until it sits against the shims, then put on the clutch nut and tighten it to 17.5 N.m (155 in. lbs.). Measure the part of the clutch called the 'clutch air gap' using a feeler gauge and replace or add shims so its size fits between 0.33 and 0.63 millimeters (0.013 and 0.025 inches). Install the A/C compressor flush on the mounting bracket with 28 N.m (20 ft. lbs.) of torque, connect the clutch field wires, lower the car, put the accessory drive belt over the clutch and belt sprocket, connect the negative battery cable, then do the Clutch Break-in Procedure.
