Jeep Liberty Timing Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Belt Tensioner on Jeep Liberty?
    A:
First, you need to take out the Timing Belt and the timing belt idler pulley for servicing and repairing the timing belt tensioner and pulley. Support the camshaft by holding Special Tool 6847 on the camsprocket while you unscrew the bolt and afterward remove both cam sprockets. Once that is complete, take the cover fasteners off and remove the rear timing belt cover. Take out the lower nut of the tensioner assembly and take the entire assembly away from the engine. When installing, put the tensioner assembly into position at the engine and secure the lower bolt so that it remains movable. Proper alignment requires one of the M10 engine bracket mounting bolts to be inserted into the tensioner's upper mount so that it turns 5 to 7 full turns. Tighten the tensioner's lower mounting bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and afterwards, take out the bolt on top used for alignment. After installing the rear timing belt cover and its fasteners, set in the timing belt idler pulley and torque the mounting bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Before putting on the timing belt, put the camshaft sprockets in place using the specified tool, torque the bolts to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) and then install the belt.
