2005 Jeep Liberty Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: First, uncover the cylinder head, then remove the camshaft position sensor and target magnet for the camshaft. After that, unplug the timing belt, then release the camshaft sprockets and their cover. Start by marking the locations of the outside bearing caps. Remove each camshaft fastener according to the instructions, noticing that the wider thrust face on number 6 intake cam should go into the spacer first since cams are not exchangeable. Find the camshafts and take them off the head afterward. If you decide to replace the rocker arms, save the original marks so you know where they go back. Use a fitting solvent to clean the camshaft. Scan the camshaft bearing journals for signs of wear and locking at the same time and also review the cylinder head for any injury and see that no oil holes are blocked. Check the condition of both cam lobes and bearing surfaces for abnormal damage and if there are problems, change the complete camshaft. Test the amount of wear on the lobe and compare it to 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch); if it reaches 0.254 mm (0.010 inch), change out the camshaft. Don't allow any pistons to reach top dead center as you install them. First, lubricate the journals, rocker arms and camshaft lobes, then install the rocker arms again in the positions they were originally in if you plan to use them again. Put the camshafts in place on the cylinder head bearing journals and insert caps No. 2 - 5 and right No. 6 on the right and left camshafts. Tighten the M6 fasteners to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) according to the order given. Lubricate bearing caps No. 1 and No. 6 with Mopar Gasket Maker, add them and tighten the M8 fasteners to 28 Nm. You should place the end caps in place before you install the seals. Please complete the camshaft oil seals first, then follow it up by fitting the camshaft target magnet and camshaft speed sensor. Next, replace the cylinder head cover, timing belt rear cover and camshaft sprocket and after that, position the timing belt.
