2006 Chrysler Sebring Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Install a Steering Wheel and Airbag on 2006 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Straighten all the wheels and unconnect the negative remote battery cable before taking off the steering wheel. Remove the screws for the speed control switch at the back of the steering wheel, pull the switch pods out and free the wire connectors. Unscrew the Driver air bag attached bolts, lifting up the air bag next and be careful not to touch or yank on the air bag squib wires as you disconnect them. Unplug the horn wire connection from the air bag mounting bracket and remove the driver air bag. Should the passive remote control be fitted, remove the 4-way connector joining the Clock Spring and steering wheel wiring harness. Turn the steering wheel bolt about 15 mm so that it's no longer held firmly in place. Hand thread the puller bolts into the steering wheel threaded holes just enough to prevent harming the Clock Spring. Put the wheel puller onto your steering wheel, keep the wheel in the straight-ahead place, loosen it with the wheel puller and finally remove the puller. Unscrew the retaining bolt, then take out the steering wheel, gently guiding all the wires through the armature so you do not damage them. To install, make sure the road wheels point forward and the Clock Spring is placed in the center with the help of the indicator. Make certain the turn signal stalk is sitting at the center. While fitting the steering wheel onto the shaft, pass the Clock Spring wires along the top of the armature. Also, connect the block tooth of the steering wheel hub to the missing tooth on the shaft and the rear pocket to the Clock Spring rotor's drive pin. Tighten the bolt that holds the steering wheel in place to 54 Nm (about 40 ft. lbs.). Should the steering wheel have remote audio switches, place the 4-way connector behind the tab in the steering wheel housing after linking it between the Clock Spring and steering wheel wiring harness. Place the horn lead at the driver air bag bracket, run the speed control wires below the mechanism and into the speed control switch pockets and connect the air bag leads to the main air bag while ensuring the shields are closable. Put the air bag in proper spot, attach the bolts and secure the left bolt first to no more than 9.6 ± 1.0 Nm (85 ± 10 inch lbs.) of torque. Attach the speed control wires to the position switches, install them and make sure the screws are tightened to not less than 12 ± 3 inch lbs. (1.4 ± 0.3 Nm). Lastly, connect the battery and check if the air bags are working.
