2006 Dodge Caravan Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Service and Repair a Deployed Air Bag on 2006 Dodge Caravan?
A: The first steps to servicing an air bag in a vehicle include cleaning up any powder and pulling both the steering wheel and front wheels straight ahead. Open the hood, remove the negative cable from the battery and let it sit for at least two minutes so the air bag reserve capacitor can lose power and keep the air bag from being set off accidentally. Detach both screws from the steering wheel that hold the air bag in place and disconnect the wires from behind the air bag. Then, remove the connector from the remote radio control cable and remove the connector on the speed control/horn harness going to the Clock Spring. Get rid of the steering wheel, then detach the shroud from the steering column and wire the traction control connector if present. First, take the 4-way and 6-way connectors off between the column's Clock Spring and instrument panel wiring harness, then remove the Clock Spring itself by undoing the two screws that hold it in place. The Clock Spring, steering wheel and complete steering column should be replaced by a lower steering column coupler if a driver air bag deploys to prevent personal injury. Perform your cleanup, place the new steering column assembly and lower steering column coupler and then attach the new Clock Spring. Join the 4-way and 6-way connectors from the Clock Spring to the instrument panel wiring harness, install the steering column shrouds and attach the traction control wire if your vehicle is so equipped. Place the bolted steering wheel in its mount, disconnect the 4-way connector from the speed control/horn harness and reattach the 2-way harness to the remote control radio harness. After that, fit the driver air bag and use the two screws to secure it after tightening them to 10 N.m (90 in. lbs.). Connecting the battery negative cable before running the system test is unsafe and could be deadly.
