2006 Dodge Charger Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install Parking Brake Shoes on 2006 Dodge Charger?
A: Before you take off the brake shoes, raise the car and support it and then remove the rear hub and bearing. After removing all slack from the parking brake shoe, detach the parking brake shoe adjuster spring (3), then take the parking brake shoe adjuster itself off (8) as well. After that, get rid of the upper brake shoe hold-down clip and pin (7) and remove the upper shoe (6) from the return spring (4) and the actuator lever (1). Take out the return spring from the lower shoe, then unhook the shoe actuator lever from the end of the cable. Start by taking out the hold-down clip and pin located beneath the brake and, next, take out the lower shoe. Check the springs, adjuster, lever and aluminum pin for any signs of wear or damage and choose to replace them as needed. Before installing, make sure the springs, adjuster, lever and aluminum shoe anchor pin are not damaged. Raise the support (2) just enough to install the lower brake shoe hold-down pin (7) from the rear of the support and put the lower shoe against the support plate (2). Fasten the hold-down clip (7) below the lower brake shoe and mount the shoe actuator lever (1) at the end of the parking brake cable (2), point the word UP on the lever to the outside. Fit the return spring (4) into the lower shoe (6), then line up the upper shoe (6) against the support plate and onto the shoe actuator lever. First insert the upper brake shoe hold-down pin (7) into the rear of the support and upper shoe, then add the upper brake shoe hold-down clip (7). Put the upper shoe on the arm (2) and slide it down until you hear it lock. Install the parking brake shoe adjuster spring (3) and use Brake Shoe Gauge, Special Tool C-3919, to measure the parking brake drum inside diameter of the rotor, making the necessary adjustments. Put the gauge on the parking brake shoes where they are widest and tighten or loosen the shoes with the adjuster star wheel (2) until the linings of both shoes touch the jaws on the gauge before you begin the real adjustment. Then, add the hub and bearing, together with the wheel speed sensor and all other needed components, bring the car down from the jack stands and make the final adjustment to the parking brake shoes.
